THAI TAVERN
I did not always like food. It became so bad that my parents had the challenge of feeding a toddler who had more energy than appetite. However, thankfully I had a food epiphany. I do not know if that is an actual scientific term, but it definitely happened to me. This abrupt realization occurred when my family and I went out to eat for a birthday. Even though I really didn’t like eating out this time I actually was excited, but at that time I couldn’t determine why. The restaurant we went to was called Thai Tavern, a small hole in the wall that I can describe today as not being able to pass an inspection. But regardless of this when the food arrived it all looked so colorful. An arrangement of red and green peppers, orange colored meats and this amazing dish of shrimp and noodles. Originally, I was going to eat fried rice but I was eyeing those noodles. As soon as they were placed on the table I asked my parents if I could have them instead. Surprised, they said yes and as soon as I started digging in I was hooked. The flavors over powered my taste buds, the spices traveled up nostrils and before I knew it I was drinking cup after cup of water. From then on Thai was my family’s food. A place we could all come to eat on a special occasion, and something I associate with my family. And what were those magical noodles? Pad Thai.
What I find so unique about Thai food is that it is unifying type of food that brings my family together. That is very important in contemporary society since it can be very difficult for families who have very different schedules to eat together. But whenever we have a reason to celebrate, there is no question about where we are going to go. It also enhances a persons taste buds and their eating experience, from Pad Thai to Pad Kra Pow, Penang curry to crab meat-fried rice. Along with tasting really good, Thai food has many similarities to Sri Lankan food, the country where my family is from. This is important because Thai food helped me appreciate Sri Lankan food more. Along with causing my to be more open to my food preferences after I first tried Thai food I learned it is important to try new things in life. If I never tried the Pad Thai today I would not be an avid lover of different types of cuisine and still that picky little boy. In that way food can cause one to break loose from fear.
